Corporate Application Integration: Challenges, Opportunities, and Implementation Strategies
In recent years, corporate applications such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, supply chain management (SCM) systems, customer relationship management (CRM) systems, sales force automation (SFA), and other corporate-level information systems have received a great deal of attention from large business enterprises. These applications have been around for about a decade now, and in that time their producers have refined them and perfected them to the point where they can be considered developmentally mature. At the same time, vendors have continued to introduce new products that have moved corporate applications toward a higher level of integration, both technically and organizationally. However, these higher levels of integration have brought with them complex technical, organizational, cultural, political, and legal issues that have made the integration process a very challenging task. This paper reviews relevant current literature, discusses several perspectives of corporate application integration, and points out potential opportunities and cludlenges inherent in the integration process. Risk reduction strategies and opportunities provided by some newly developed technologies (e.g., software agents) are also discussed
Hydrodynamical Simulations of the Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 1097
NGC 1097 is a nearby barred spiral galaxy believed to be interacting with the
elliptical galaxy NGC 1097A located to its northwest. It hosts a Seyfert 1
nucleus surrounded by a circumnuclear starburst ring. Two straight dust lanes
connected to the ring extend almost continuously out to the bar. The other ends
of the dust lanes attach to two main spiral arms. To provide a physical
understanding of its structural and kinematical properties, two-dimensional
hydrodynamical simulations have been carried out. Numerical calculations reveal
that many features of the gas morphology and kinematics can be reproduced
provided that the gas flow is governed by a gravitational potential associated
with a slowly rotating strong bar. By including the self-gravity of the gas
disk in our calculation, we have found the starburst ring to be gravitationally
unstable which is consistent with the observation in \citet{hsieh11}. Our
simulations show that the gas inflow rate is 0.17 M_\sun yr into the
region within the starburst ring even after its formation, leading to the

TEGS-CN: A Statistical Method for Pathway Analysis of Genome-wide Copy Number Profile
The effects of copy number alterations make up a significant part of the tumor genome profile, but pathway analyses of these alterations are still not well established. We proposed a novel method to analyze multiple copy numbers of genes within a pathway, termed Test for the Effect of a Gene Set with Copy Number data (TEGS-CN). TEGS-CN was adapted from TEGS, a method that we previously developed for gene expression data using a variance component score test. With additional development, we extend the method to analyze DNA copy number data, accounting for different sizes and thus various numbers of copy number probes in genes. The test statistic follows a mixture of X2 distributions that can be obtained using permutation with scaled X2 approximation. We conducted simulation studies to evaluate the size and the power of TEGS-CN and to compare its performance with TEGS. We analyzed a genome-wide copy number data from 264 patients of non-small-cell lung cancer. With the Molecular Signatures Database (MSigDB) pathway database, the genome-wide copy number data can be classified into 1814 biological pathways or gene sets. We investigated associations of the copy number profile of the 1814 gene sets with pack-years of cigarette smoking. Our analysis revealed five pathways with significant P values after Bonferroni adjustment (<2.8 × 10−5), including the PTEN pathway (7.8 × 10−7), the gene set up-regulated under heat shock (3.6 × 10−6), the gene sets involved in the immune profile for rejection of kidney transplantation (9.2 × 10−6) and for transcriptional control of leukocytes (2.2 × 10−5), and the ganglioside biosynthesis pathway (2.7 × 10−5). In conclusion, we present a new method for pathway analyses of copy number data, and causal mechanisms of the five pathways require further study
On The Orbital Evolution of Jupiter Mass Protoplanet Embedded in A Self-Gravity Disk
We performed a series of hydro-dynamic simulations to investigate the orbital
migration of a Jovian planet embedded in a proto-stellar disk. In order to take
into account of the effect of the disk's self gravity, we developed and adopted
an \textbf{Antares} code which is based on a 2-D Godunov scheme to obtain the
exact Reimann solution for isothermal or polytropic gas, with non-reflecting
boundary conditions. Our simulations indicate that in the study of the runaway
(type III) migration, it is important to carry out a fully self consistent
treatment of the gravitational interaction between the disk and the embedded
planet. Through a series of convergence tests, we show that adequate numerical
resolution, especially within the planet's Roche lobe, critically determines
the outcome of the simulations. We consider a variety of initial conditions and
show that isolated, non eccentric protoplanet planets do not undergo type III
migration. We attribute the difference between our and previous simulations to
the contribution of a self consistent representation of the disk's self
gravity. Nevertheless, type III migration cannot be completely suppressed and
its onset requires finite amplitude perturbations such as that induced by
planet-planet interaction. We determine the radial extent of type III migration
as a function of the disk's self gravity.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figure
Discovering important factors of intangible firm value by association rules
It is very important for investors to understand the critical factors affecting the value of
firms before making investments. In knowledge-based economy, the method for creating firm value
transfers from traditional physical assets to intangible knowledge. As intangible assets value is an
important part of firm value, valuation of intangible assets becomes a widespread topic of interest in
the future of economy. This paper applies association rules, one data mining technique, to discover
critical factors affecting firm value in Taiwan and to provide a more flexible model than the traditional
regression method. Based on collecting related factors found in literature, the results indicate that
R&D intensity, family, participation in management, pyramids, profitability, and dividend are the six
important factors, in which some are consistent with significant important variables in prior literature,
but most of them are unique for Taiwan, one emerging economy
An East-West Comparison of IS Professionals\u27 Performance and Knowledge/Skills: An Empirical Study of USA vs Taiwan
The outsourcing literature suggests that the capabilities of partners involved in outsourcing or off-shoring projects are a crucial factor for the success of the projects. This paper studies the capabilities of IS professionals from the USA and Taiwan on issues such as performance, time spent on IS related activities, and required skills vs. skills possessed. The goal is to determine the differences among these two groups in their core IT capabilities and to offer practitioners an empirical reference for carrying out their IS development decisions. Findings from the current study indicate that Taiwanese professionals tended to focus more on the technical issues and hardware/software details, while American professionals were proficient in business modeling, inter-personal communication, and end-user training. These findings present an opportunity for partnership between the two countries to develop low-cost but high quality IS projects. Other business implications are also discussed
A Methodology for Evaluating Whether Web Sites Support Their Organizational Critical Activities
Organizational critical activities (OCAs) are activities which must receive constant management attention in order for that organization to be successful in its industry. Some empirical studies have shown that all of these activities may not be well supported by organizations’ websites. This research attempts to develop the evaluation methodology which can be used to assess how well an organization’s website supports the organization’s OCAs if the OCAs are identified. Based on a review of relevant literature, a prototype was proposed, and then evolved and tested through eight case studies in New Zealand universities. In total, more than two thousands web pages were evaluated and 37 semi-structured interviews were conducted. The final methodology includes five operational stages and seven forms. The results of final case were presented in order to show how the methodology can be utilized in the website evaluation. Some implications and future research are also provided
